Martyn graduated from Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia in 1985 and travelled to England shortly after graduation. He has been exclusively practicing ophthalmology since 1996. Martyn completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Bristol in 1998, and between 1998 and 2005 he established and ran a very successful state of the art ophthalmology referral practice providing referral services to veterinary practices in the south of England. In 1996 he gained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Certificate in Ophthalmology, and in 2000 he was awarded the Diploma in Ophthalmology, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ highest qualification in ophthalmology. Whilst in the UK he was an examiner for the RCVS in ophthalmology and was on the RCVS Ophthalmology Board. Martyn returned to Perth in 2005 and established Perth Veterinary Ophthalmology, initially working from Rivergum Referral Services. Expansion of the practice has lead to Martyn setting up a state of the art ophthalmology only referral practice at Perth Animal Eye Hospital in the Perth suburb of Manning, Western Australia, where he works with Dr Anita Dutton. Martyn and Anita are Western Australia’s only Specialist Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
Martyn publishes articles on ophthalmology and is a peer reviewer for veterinary magazines. He is actively involved in lecturing on various aspects of veterinary ophthalmology to students at Murdoch University, general practitioners and veterinary ophthalmologists both in Australia and overseas. Martyn is an adjunct Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Ophthalmology at Murdoch University. He has also examined candidates for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Certificate and Diploma in Veterinary Ophthalmology, and for the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists Fellowship in Ophthalmology.
Martyn takes pride in providing a second to none referral service to veterinary surgeons and their clients and pets. He believes the relationship between the pet, the owner, the referral practitioner and the referring vet is built on a foundation of compassion, trust, quality of service, affordability, availability and communication, and using these criteria he offers veterinary surgeons in Western Australia the option of referring to a world class ophthalmology unit.
